The tub wall itself
About fifteen inches to lift a leg over, on a wet surface, usually with nothing solid within reach. It is the single riskiest movement in the house and it happens twice a day.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS FOR A PARENT
You are probably not the one who will use this shower. Beaver Bath Co. gets called by the son or daughter about as often as by the homeowner, so this page is written to you: what actually causes the falls, and what we build into the wall to prevent them.
WHAT ACTUALLY GOES WRONG
Falls in the bathroom rarely happen the way people picture them. These are what we find when we take an old alcove apart.
About fifteen inches to lift a leg over, on a wet surface, usually with nothing solid within reach. It is the single riskiest movement in the house and it happens twice a day.
Towel bars and soap dishes are anchored into drywall to hold a pound of terrycloth. People grab them anyway, on the way down. This is the most common thing we find pulled out of a wall.
Balance narrows with age and a wet floor removes what is left. A bench is not a luxury item; it turns a standing task into a seated one.
In an old alcove the valve sits under the shower head, so the water hits you before you can adjust it. Moving the control to the entry side is a small thing that changes the whole routine.
THE PART THAT MATTERS MOST
A grab bar is only as good as what it is screwed into. Tile anchors and toggle bolts hold until the moment someone puts their full weight on one, which is the exact moment they are supposed to work.
Solid blocking means real lumber let into the studs behind the finished wall, continuous across the wet area at the heights a hand actually reaches. It costs almost nothing while the wall is already open, and it means a bar can go anywhere later without cutting tile.
We put it in on every conversion, including the ones where nobody wants a bar yet. If you are comparing quotes, ask the other contractor whether blocking is in their scope. Most will say no.
